They call democracy "self-government" because it only works when we get involved. You may contribute time, talents and/or treasure to a political candidate or a political party. Such partisan activity is the basis of the American democratic process and important to the community. But those are not the only ways to be politically active.
Through the League of Women Voters, women and men have their collective voices heard on many of the most important issues of our day. We study those issues, with input from all sides, and reach consensus before taking positions. That process gives our positions great credibility, and we don't stop there. Our League also strives to open the local electoral process, with nonpartisan, volunteer-produced candidates information, events and programs, plus volunteers participating as poll workers and observers.
So, if you see problems that the government should do something about... If you have ideas about better ways to spend tax dollars or you are concerned about the amounts of tax revenue collected... If you are concerned about the fairness of government programs or processes... ... then do more than complain; get involved!
If you're looking for nonpartisan political activity with other civic-minded women and men, the LWVHC may be just the organization for you. Explore our website and those of our state and national affiliates – LWVFLA.org and LWVUS.org (also found on the "Resources & Links" page). If you'd like to talk with one of our members about the League, leave your phone number in a message on the "Contact LWVHC" page.
